Hand me down my mother’s work
In the bright patterns that she made
For she did keep a dream or two
From before she was a slave.

Hand me down my mother’s work
And the symbols that she knew
For I must make a patchwork quilt
For all my children too.


Quilts of Love

She cut each piece of cloth
As thought it were made of gold
With confidence and patience
She toiled with each fold.

She matched all the colors
With scraps she had saved
From each small child’s garment
To this she had engraved.

Her heart into each quilt
As she pieced all by hand
A quilt for each child
A gift made of love.

She knew she had finished
A quilt made of love
For each child a memory
Of Mom’s unfaltering love.
